Warning

Police have confirmed that a suspect and three law enforcement officers were killed in an hours-long shootout that has since ended in east Charlotte, North Carolina, April 29. The shooting began amid an attempt to serve a warrant at a residence on the 5000 block of Galway Drive. Five other law enforcement officers were reportedly shot and injured amid the incident, and authorities have taken two other occupants of the residence into custody for questioning.

Police have announced that the home is now clear and local residents no longer need to shelter in place now that the area is safe. Despite the lifting of the shelter-in-place instructions, police cautioned that law enforcement officers would stay at the scene to conduct investigative work and some local roads would remain closed. Several area schools implemented lockdown measures amid the shooting incident, and those campuses' after-school activities may continue to experience disruptions through at least late April 29.

Heightened security and residual disruptions to transport and business will likely continue to affect the area until authorities vacate the scene of the shooting and reopen closed roads.

Avoid the vicinity of Galway Drive until authorities conclude their investigative work at the incident site and vacate the area. Consider taking alternative routes to circumvent the area and any residual disruptions. Adhere to all instructions issued by local officials.
